Scientific name: Barbastella
barbastellus
The Western barbastelle has a snub nose that is just perfect for secular forests. It prefers this kind of habitat, namely with numerous old trees presenting hollows. It is a species of medium size, with a short and bulging nose (‘snub’), with triangular ears and an almost black fur. Cold-resistant, during hibernation it can frequently be found at the entrance of caves, mines, sometimes even at below-zero degrees Celsius. Given the fact that it prefers secular forests, this species can be strongly affected by illegal activities (such as logging or road-building).
