European fire-bellied toad

Scientific name: Bombina bombina
It is a predominantly aquatic species that lives all the time, excepting the hibernation period, in the water, being found in lakes, ponds, puddles from lowlands or even plateaus. It can often be found on the banks of waters. It hibernates on dryland, in pits, rodent galleries, underneath rocks, from September - beginning of October to the middle of March. It is 5 cm long, with a stocky body, flattened head and rounded snout. The eyes are relatively small, very protuberant, and the pupil is round or heart-shaped. The colouring of the back ranges from grey to grey-brownish, and the abdomen is black-bluish with large, irregular, red or orange spots, and having white dots. The red spots on the belly are poisonous for predators, this being the reason for which the European fire-bellied toad has few of them.
