Yellow-bellied toad

Scientific name Bombina variegata
The yellow-bellied toad is a very common species in our country, being very sensitive to pollution caused by human activity. It is a small-sized frog (3-5 cm), with a dorso-ventral flattened body, with rugged skin, heart-shaped pupil and brown-grey or lime coloured back. The abdomen is pale yellow with black spots of variable dimensions. The substances secreted by the yellow parts of the abdomen are not poisonous for man, only for natural predators. If you touch this frog, do not rub your eyes or mouth afterwards, since it may cause a sting. Simply wash your hands with water. This frog is dependent upon streams or puddles, even if they are temporary. Altitude-wise, it can be met at heights ranging from 150 m to 2000 m in mountain grasslands. An interesting aspect is that the barely metamorphosed tadpoles are carried by strong winds and then fall unto the ground as a real-life frog rain.
