Scientific name: Lycaena dispar
It can be recognized by
the orange-red colour of the wings that are black on the sides. The male has a
black dot in the middle of the front wing. The colour of the female’s wings is
more faded; they have more black spots and the submarginal black band is wider.
The inferior part of the wing is grey-bluish in colour, wth black spots and an
orange submarginal band.
It lives in swampy
hayfields and humid areas on the banks of rivers and zones prone to flooding.
It prefers wooded places where its plant hosts can be found: the great water
dock (Rumex hydrolapathum), western dock (R. aquaticus), curly dock (R.
crispus). It is a vulnerable species because of the sanitation of the humid
areas it prefers, while in some areas it has disappeared from its natural
habitats.
It flies from May until
September.
