Scientific name: Barbus carpathicus/petenyi
The Romanian barbel is
very similar to the common barbel (Barbus barbus) that can be found
in lowland waters, but reaches a smaller size than the common
variety. Moreover, its colouring is often different, the sides having
numerous dark spots, in contrast to the common barbel, whose
colouring has a yellowish hue, lacking spots in adult specimens.
In Romania, in Tisa’s
basin, this species bears the name of Barbus carpathicus and can be
found in well-oxygenated waters, generally in hill and mountain
rivers.
