Common bent-wing bat

Scientific name: Miniopterus schreibersii
The common bent-winged bats form one of the largest bat colonies of Europe in the caves of Romania, for example in the Huda lui Papară Cave (with over 34.000 specimens) or Șura Mare Cave (with over 17.000 specimens). It is a species with a very short snout and bulging forehead, as well as short and triangular ears, which do not pass the top of the head. They form colonies in caves or other underground locations all throughout the year, these colonies looking like grey-black living carpets on the ceiling. It is endangered because of speleological tourism, intensive forest exploitation and the use of insecticides.
