Balcan golden loach

Scientific name: Sabanejewia balcanica 
It is small in size (up to 12 cm), with an elongated body, laterally compressed, resembling a taenia worm. The small mouth is oriented towards the lower part of the body, inferior in respect to the lateral-frontal plan and has two pairs of tegumentary extensions, barbels. It feeds on insects and their larvae. It reproduces during the months of April – June in small quick rocky rivers. The Balcan golden loach lives in rivers from moutainside to lowland areas. It sometimes buries itself in the sandy carpet.
