Lesser mouse-eared bat

Scientific name: Myotis blythii
It is one of the largest bat species in Romania, with a massive snout, long ears and imposing teeth. Very similar to the common bat, the two come out as twin species. During the winter it hibernates in underground shelters where it can form clusters of tens or hundreds of specimens. During the summer, the birthing colonies can form in caves (with thousands of specimens), as well as in the attic of historical buildings, for example in churches (with hundreds of specimens). During periods of increased sensitivity, the species can be negatively affected by uninformed speleological tourism and building renovation.
