Scientific name: Dryocopus
martius
It is the largest
woodpecker in Europe. It lives in the area of coniferous and mixed forests,
being recently often also found in lowland forests. It feeds on fruits and tree
seeds, but also larvae and insects which it digs out of tree trunks, leaving
behind large holes.
