Scientific name: Myotis myotis
As a member of the
Myotis genus, it is relatively big, being one of the largest bats of
Europe. It weighs up to 45 grams.
In contrast to a lot
of other bats, it doesn’t hunt during flight using ecolocation, but
picks insects, localizing its prey just by listening to their noises.
Myotis myotis therefore uses ecolocation only for spatial
orientation, even if it emits ultrasounds when it nears its prey. It
sometimes forms colonies of a couple thousand specimens in church
towers, spacious attics or caves. It hibernates in underground
shelters, caves, mines, cellars, solitary individuals even in rock
crevices. It hunts most frequently in mature deciduous or mixed
forests with a semi-open substrate, more rarely in coniferous
forests, capturing an important part of its prey directly on the
ground. It can cover large distances (over 10 km) from the shelters
to the feeding habitats.
