Scarce fritillary

Scientific name: Euphydryas maturna
The superior part of the wings has an orange and brown mottled pattern, and the inferior part is orange-red in colour. It mostly lives in deciduous forests with a mix of ash tree, in lowland and hill areas, and less in the mountains. The female lays eggs on ash tree leaves, in multiple layers. Having a very complex biologicle cycle, the caterpillar feeds on tree leaves such those of the ash tree, popplar, willow, as well as on grassy vegetation. The adults apper at the end of May, and the flight period extends until the end of this month, in higher areas even until July.
