Scientific name: Lucanus cervus
It
is the largest choleoptere in Romania. It has a massive elongated
black body with a matte finish, 3-8 cm in length. The name of cervus
means, in Latin, stag, and it refers to the mandibles of the stag
beetle. They resemble stag horns and can reach, in males, even half
of the body length.
It
lives in trunks and branches of oak or sessile and is active in the
afternoon and evening. The larvae most frequently grow in oak hollows
and stumps, and the larvar period lasts between 4 and 5 years.
It
flies from April until September.
