Scientific name: Rhinolophus ferrumequinum
It
is one of the largest bat species in Romania and gifted with the
specific nose of the horsehoe bat. This nose allows, by emitting
ultrasounds, one of the most precise means of navigation among
animals. The great horsehoe bat envelops itself completely in its
wings during rest, forming colonies of tens or hundreds of
individuals. In these colonies, the bats stack close to each other.
This species occupies caves during winter, respectively the attics of
buildings during summer. It is threatened by speleological tourism
and fragmentation of habitat.
